Union Grove Baptist Church had its beginnings in 1888 when the church purchased 9/10 of an acre on May 4, for $1.00. The first church was made of logs and the first founding members were J. Wiley Bradsher and his wife, Noveller Villines Bradsher. Around 1903, J. Wiley Bradsher was called to the ministry and
became pastor of the church. He held the post for more than 40 years until his death in 1945. During Rev. Bradsher’s pastorship, the congregation left the log building and moved into the frame
structure, which was later used as a public school for African American students and still stands today on the east side of the church property.
Around 1921, the growing congregation moved into its third building which remains part of the present day church. From the late 1930's until 1970 when it returned to its original name, the church was known as The Church of the City of God in the Wilderness.
Current pastor, Rev. Rufus L. Johnson, Sr., was installed in 1990. Under his leadership, the church continues its spiritual ministry, teaching God’s Word and shining its light to bring others to the Light, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. With the intensity of a laser, Pastor Johnson has focused the church on youth leadership and education. Youth development is key to keeping God’s church alive and true to its mission. There’s much more to learn about Union Grove’s rich and long history of serving God’s people. Attend any of our services and programs and see for yourself.
